In other news, 13 and 14 are both nearing completion and will likely be released, if not together, in quick succession. In the meantime, if our gentle readers have any comments comparing aspects of SSF and FLC releases, please post! We’d love to hear feedback about whose fonts you like better, or whose karaoke is superior, or whether you’d like to leave things like ‘Okaa-sama’ and ‘hime-san’ (un)translated, or whether lead-in ellipses are totally a fashion faux pas, etcetera…
Don’t fear; your comments will not in any way delay the long awaited episodes 13/14, but may be used to help improve consistency of standards between the two groups throughout the rest of the season.

Ohhh, thanks for the great update, I look forward to the releases!
Personally, I’ve enjoyed both group’s approaches to translation so it doesn’t matter to me. I have a vague preference for hime-san and such to remain untranslated but nothing has ever actually stood out to me as better or worse.
I guess maybe with the next releases I’ll pay attention

I don’t see any real issue with the subs from both SSF and FLC. The subs are simple and easy to read, which is what I prefer. I understand a little japanese, so if you want to untranslate the common words, that’s fine.
Thanks for updating us!! I’m very excited about eps 13 & 14. I usually prefer them untranslated because i know some japanese….
Could i be greedy and suggest using “hime-san” (for example) at the bottom and putting a note at the top to explain what it really means. (just once of course, not everytime). That way, people who are really interested will pause to read the explanations and whether or not they understand, everyone will be happy…. =)
In any case, whatever you decide, I am just very grateful and happy to have a translated version of SM!!! My sincerest thanks to both SSF & FLC for your hard work!!! =]

heya i am soo happy that the two groups will be working with each other! i will (hopefully) speed things up and not put as much pressure on both groups! both of your subs and kareoke are great so i think both are fine.
concerning the whole hime-san and okaa-sama whereas most anime lovers will know the meaning and not need the translation some others might be baffled so i think that perhaps the translation would be needed for them or i like the idea of ‘ryuuki’ about the note.
anyway thanks for the hard work and cant wait for the releases!

As to the honorifics, please leave them as they are. Don’t translate them. Why?
So why can’t “Otou-san,” “Hime-san,” etc. also retain their flavor with an optional T?N that gives their meaning?
- Because, 1, they give flavor to your subs. A lot of subbers make the mistake of sucking all the Japanese flavor out of their subs, which is unfortunate since it seems to be quite common. They’re subs — made by fans for fans, not for the mass market, right? So why make them into virtually unpalatable (mass-market) dubs? I usually stop watching releases that leave out the honorifics, no matter how interesting the story.
- And 2, because it’s so nice to be able to read some of what we hear, which gives the impression that the translation’s thorough, that nothing’s been left out
Look at it this way: sushi is called sushi, not raw fish rolled up in rice or some such; the same applies to croissant, which isn’t called a crescent-shaped bun. The name retains it’s French flavor, so to speak.
As for the font, the more straightforward and legible it is, the better, IMHO.

I personally like how you translate things, and I’d be okay with certain words being untranslated…
…But I always feel the product is better if it’s translated all the way, unless it’s a special thing.

I actually agree 90% with Ryuuki in number 3. About the 10%, well, I prefer for the meaning (that would be on the top of the screen) to be showed for at least 3 times, because some people may missed out on a couple of episodes or didn’t see it for th first time, or just to remind hem what’s the meaning & so on, etc, etc, etc….
some people might also like to learn a bit of Japanese from anime, I guess, just like I do ^^ LOL
But, either way is alright, I guess…. I feel thankful enough for the anime to be translated, but for preference… I prefer it to be untranslated… Thank you!

about the translation, it´s fine the way it is in my opinion. The descriptions are sometimes needed, sometimes not, but it depends a lot from person to person. so keep them, better that way!

As for differences, I think FLC’s dark-outlined subs read better on-screen, so I’d keep those (actually, the subs for the Eng. lyrics in the OP are even neater). Also, I think you might as well leave the personal pronouns untranslated (like “onii-chan”, “okaa-san”) since it’s usually obvious from context or earlier dialogue who the person’s talking about (“Eigetsu” = “onii-chan”).
OTOH, people’s titles, especially the military & court titles, should definitely be translated, since those are not as easy to decipher (unless you’ve watched 80+ eps of Saiunkoku & Twelve Kingdoms *grin*). I’d leave it up to translator’s discretion whether or not to translate nicknames, like how Ensei calls Shuurei, “hime-san”/”Princess”.

At crunchyroll.com they have the sauinkoku season 2 ep 1-25 that are all subbed. i’m waiting for 26 -39 to be subbed anyone knows where or when they will be?

As far as the subs go, it would be awesome if you left some of the more common Japanese in. It feels much more natural, and is common industry-wide… and makes watching fansubs that much more cool. Any noobs who don’t know the terms are gonna have to learn them sooner or later… Oh, and as far as text goes, whatever’s more legible works…

Hi! I’m glad that 13 and 14 are going to be released hopefully soon. I have no preference between either font or karaoke, because they are both really good. That’s probably not that helpful. As for ‘okaasan’ and ‘himesan’, I’d leave them untranslated because most people already know what they mean and if they don’t, there is always earlier episodes or even Crystalis – they keep putting up what these terms mean in their fansubs; or they could look it up or just ask. Lots of ‘or’ there. -_-;

Just wondering, is there or will there be a season 3 of The Story of Saiunkoku Monogatari?
I think it is much better to leave the common Japanese terms like Oka-sama and himi-sama. I’m also very much in favor of cultural and other references at the end. As for fonts, I have a very slight preference towards Four Leaf Clover’s.

1) Well I actually have to go back and watch the difference in the font. I slightly prefer the FLC font and its color, somehow I felt it is more soothing watch.
2) Please leave it untranslated about the title, it is much better as sometimes the translation take out the real cultural feeling. For example Oni-chan mean older brother or big brother not just brother, however in English you don’t usually put older or big in front which make things sound funny. I would say keep it untranslated as it provide the real feeling of the scene but having an explanation on top would be nice to have.
3) I didn’t pay attention to the Bonsai meant to be Bansai until reading the post… kind of got me confuse there for moment. Give me a smile there.
Congratulation on your merger! I can’t detect the different translation between the two group if there is any. Are there? But one plea though, if it possible to name the file in one format either [FLC-SSF] or [SSF-FLC]? Since a put all the file in the same folder, it can run in a sequence.
